Lord Himself says in Sri Pa:nchara:tra Agama Scriptures,

లక్ష్మీ హి పురుషకారత్వే నిర్దిష్టా పరమర్షిభి హి

మత్ ప్రాప్తిం ప్రతి జంతూనాం సంసారే పతతాం అథహ ||

Have you ever thought in the following lines?

  • Why am I going through hard times?
  • How do I stay happy all the time?
  • Is there end to all suffering in the world?
  • What is the purpose of my life?
  • Where did my loved one go after the death?
  • Why do good people get into troubles?
  • How do I get out of this temporary state?

We experience hardships because of the arrogance in us. We believe that we are very powerful and independent. It is not what we do, but it is these thoughts with which we do our duties that bonds or releases us from the karma. Finally, one day – when we get tired of trying to do everything and then realising that there is something that is driving us, We then seek refuge of that Supreme power, then we look for help.

The answer to all such above questions is Bramha or Aanandam. Scriptures say that this ‘aananda thatvam’, whom we call God takes a form and begins to give sadupadesam, wise words. So, why not we just identify that form and pray to him, who is Lakshmi ammavar then?

Well, this aananda thatvam by nature has an ability to rule the creation and a power to protect us. The karuna, compassion in him is deep down within him. And hence, he wishes to eliminate the arrogance in us by making us experience the effect of the arrogance-filled deeds that we have being doing. We are then given different bodies to experience the results of all our wrong doings and then come out of the chakram/samsaram. But, we are like Duryodhana who said, జానామి ధర్మం జానమ్యాం అధర్మం, నహి మే నివృత్తి – I know what is right and what is wrong, but I don’t want to do the right thing and I don’t want to stop doing the wrong thing.

Thus, we are taking births forever!

Then comes the Mother Lakshmi. She is by nature just compassion. She is described as having deep blue eyes, depicting her compassion, asithekshana. As soon as she finds some level of aanukulyam in us, a positive tendency towards God, she encourages it. She also tries to create interest towards God. She then works with God and recommends us on our behalf. Without Her, he is just in the mode of ruling through punishments. And our punishments are never coming to an end because we keep acquiring more and more karma!

Parama rushis, the rushis who meditate on God’s nature are the foreseers and have identified the Lakshmi thatvam to be the ONLY way to get the complete grace of God. It is not only because of their acceptance about Lakshmi thatvam, but even God likes the recommendation of the mother. It is proven in kakasura vruthatham in Srimad Ramayanam. He does not say ‘no’ to those recommended by her.

The mother, Maha Lakshmi’s companionship with God makes him to forgive us and grace us from the bonds of the samsaram. She makes him ‘Purusha’ (Puru+Sanothi = to give more), and is therefore called ‘Purushakarini’.

May the grace of Mother Maha Lakshmi be on us which is the only path to the pure bliss that God can give us!
